Course:  WR 227 Technical and Professional writing with a focus on bicycle urbanism in Copenhagen

Credits: 4

Prerequisites: WR 121, basic computer literacy, and intermediate word processing skills

Program Type: Split Course (The course will begin in Portland and a portion of the course will be taught oversees)

Program Description:

The class will start with a case study concerning bicycle transportation in Portland, including safety, infrastructure, parking, equity, affordability and new ridership.  Students will compile a research report on a specific topic in advance of the overseas program component.  After examining issues from a local perspective, the course will travel to Copenhagen, Denmark to explore the same issues comparatively from Denmark.   Students will observe, take notes, contribute to a shared archive of photos, compare, and submit a revised version of initial research report. When they return they will display their photos in a gallery.

Program Highlights:

Copenhagen is a great place to explore the theme Bicycle Urbanism from a professional writing standpoint.  In Copenhagen, 62% of residents commute to work by bike.

Highlights include:
  • use of a bicycle and time to explore Copenhagen on your own
  • three guest lectures led by on-site urban studies faculty
  • tours of Copenhagen’s bicycle paths and bridges, led by urban studies faculty
  • meet with local politicians to learn more about bicycle policy in Copenhagen
  • visit local bicycle makers
  • live the bicycle lifestyle by grocery shopping and picnic by bike
  • meet with local families to learn more about the bicycle lifestyle
  • explore Copenhagen’s acclaimed restaurants and prepare your own food in dorm style kitchens
  • stay in dormitory style, university housing
  • contribute journal entries and photos of Copenhagen that will be displayed in a local gallery upon return to Portland
  • visit local amusement parks, natural areas, and historic sights.
